working together to obliviate cancer
Most of us (The Scrawney-Morgan Foundation) met at the annual 4th of July event at Boston's Hatch Shell. Our love of country brought us together, however it was cancer that bound us together for life.
When cancer walked through our doors, this uninvited guest began attacking those we love most, changing our lives forever. The idea that we had to do "something" percolated until our group of friends decided to take action...
It began when we signed up for the Pan-Mass Challenge Bike Ride to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, this event and fellow teams became our 2nd family. It was a wonderful place to find like-minded folks who had a passion to end the scourge of cancer. Since its inception in 1980, the PMC has raised 3/4 of a billion (Yes, billion with a "B" ) for groundbreaking cancer research! Their fundraising efforts account for 54% of The Jimmy Fund's annual revenue.
We were hooked and as a result Team Scrawney-Morgan was born! Our team is named after our basement bar where everyone truly DOES know your name! The annual PMC ride is where we discovered an absolute army of dedicated people fighting this war on cancer together. We met selfless Moms and Dads, brothers and sisters, even Grandparents. There were friends and strangers all taking up arms with handle bars and pedals to fight this battle.
We've met doctors and nurses that put Marvel Superheroes to shame with their courage, humor, and dedication to seeking a cure. Our team had found a club of sorts, one that nobody wants to join, yet filled our lives with HOPE once we did.
Since our first adult ride in 2013, our foundation also formed the Cape Ann Kids PMC chapter offering an annual bike ride for those not quite old enough to ride in the PMC as well as established the Hook-A-Cure Fishing Tournament and Event that takes place each summer in beautiful Gloucester, MA. In the Fall our Team participates in the annual Jimmy Fund Walk, pounding the pavement in memory and honor of more people we can count! All of these programs have the same mission, raising money to obliviate cancer. Cancer FREE is the way the world should be!
Since its inception in 2013, Team Scrawney-Morgan members have joined forces with vendors, donors, sponsors, volunteers, and anglers—riding, walking & fishing our way to a fundraising total thus far of over $230,000.00. However, we are not done yet! In 2018 we expanded our mission by partnering with the Joe Andruzzi Foundation to aid local families overcome by the debt brought on by a cancer diagnosis.
Our 4 core programs, The PMC events, Pour for a Pint Blood Drives, the Hook-A-Cure Fishing Tournament, and The Jimmy Fund Walk, are the pillars of The Scrawney-Morgan /Partner for HOPE Foundation, with many new and wonderful events on their way! Our mantra? Together let's make a very serious mission a lot of fun, inspire philanthropy and OBLIVIATE this disease once and for all one mile, one step and one fish at a time!
